Amandine Guruceaga is a French visual artist, born in 1989.
Guruceaga is an alchemist of material, seeking to explore the limits of ordinary materials to create works that reflect the fragility of our world and the importance of history in matter. She uses the surface as a meeting place between painting and sculpture, creating works that challenge the boundaries between artistic genres.
Her work is characterized by the use of dyed and bleached textiles to create works of art. Guruceaga began working with wax, an African fabric developed by colonists for trade. By bleaching the fabric, she brings out the patterns that reveal the reactions of the material, underscoring the importance of history in matter. The colors used in her works also reflect the condition of our liquid society, where the boundaries between genders and cultures are blurred and constantly evolving.
Guruceaga also works with burnt and etched metal to create rough textures that evoke skin and the scars left by history. These elements, combined with her constant search for the limit states of ordinary matter, create sculptures that are both strong and delicate, massive and unstable.
Her sculpture is an invitation to explore the beauty and complexity of the surface, this porous boundary between the inside and outside, between the visible and invisible, between the organic and inorganic. In her work, Guruceaga invites us to reflect on our relationship with the world around us, on the fragility of our environment, and on the importance of "taking care" .
Guruceaga has an impressive list of solo and group exhibitions to her credit. In 2018, she took part in the LVMH Métiers d’Art residency and displayed the result at the Monteverita gallery, Paris, for her exhibition «Colour Sparks». She also exhibited at the Art-0-Rama event in 2019 and presented her booth for La Compagnie Fruitière in Côte d’Ivoire. In 2022, she participated in the Lux Art Fair in Luxembourg and «Plunging into Color» at the Montélimar Contemporary Art Museum. In 2023, she will present a solo exhibition at the Julie Caredda Gallery in Paris.
Guruceaga has also been selected to participate in prestigious events and exhibitions such as the MAIF Prize for Sculpture, «Run Run Run» at the Villa Arson Art Center, Nice, «Outside Our» for the Prix des Révélations Emerige in 2018, at the 64th Salon Montrouge, Le Beffroi, Paris.
Her sculptures have been commissioned for several public or in-situ projects such as «Mirador Balnéaire» as part of Marseille’s capital of culture in 2013, the Pitch Immo commission for the transat or Bouygues Immo for a real estate program in 2023.
Her work has been widely recognized by the artistic community and she has been the recipient of several residencies, including the Vent des Forêts residency in Meuse in 2018, the LVMH Métiers d’Art residency at the Riba Guixa tannery in Spain in 2017, and the Ateliers de la Ville de Marseille from 2016 to 2018. She was also the winner of the Traversée program from the Ministry of Culture in 2021 and a finalist for the MAIF Prize for Sculpture the same year.
